Women's Football Was Banned for Fifty Years
On Boxing Day 1920, Dick, Kerr Ladies drew 53,000 spectators to Goodison Park with thousands more locked outside. Less than a year later the English FA banned women from using its grounds entirely. The ban stood until 1971.
Referees Once Watched From the Sideline
Until 1891, referees stayed off the field and captains settled disputes between themselves. The penalty kick arrived that same year, and referees have been on the pitch ever since.
