France's Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup, a single-tournament record that has stood for more than sixty years. He reportedly played the tournament in borrowed boots after his own fell apart.

Women's Football Was Banned for Fifty Years

On Boxing Day 1920, Dick, Kerr Ladies drew 53,000 spectators to Goodison Park with thousands more locked outside. Less than a year later the English FA banned women from using its grounds entirely. The ban stood until 1971.
